The Basics of Self-Care

Eat well

Nourishing your body with balanced, wholesome foods is a cornerstone of self-care. This means including a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats in your diet. Eating well fuels your body, sharpens your mind, and helps regulate mood and energy. Try to eat mindfully, stay hydrated, and limit processed foods, sugar, and alcohol.

Be active

Physical activity doesn’t just benefit your body - it boosts your mental and emotional health, too. Whether it's jogging, dancing, biking, swimming, or simply going for a brisk walk, moving your body regularly can reduce anxiety, elevate your mood, and improve overall health. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate activity most days, but even small bursts count!

Get healthy sleep

Sleep is your body’s time to recover and restore. Prioritise getting 7 - 9 hours of quality sleep each night by maintaining a consistent bedtime, avoiding screens before bed, and creating a calm, dark, cool environment. Poor sleep affects everything from your mood to your immune system, so treat rest like the necessity it is - not a luxury.

Reduce your stress

Chronic stress takes a serious toll on both your physical and mental health. Managing stress might involve breathing exercises, meditation, journaling, spending time in nature, or doing activities you enjoy. Know your limits and learn to say no when you need to. Even short breaks throughout the day can help restore a sense of calm.

Reach out

You’re not alone. Connecting with others - friends, family, support groups, or professionals - is vital for emotional well-being. Talking about what you're going through can bring clarity and comfort, and sometimes just having someone listen is enough. If you're struggling, don’t hesitate to seek support.
