Scenario 24) RGN Intellectual Disabilities

Scenario 24 | RGN Intellectual Disabilities

Scenario 1: You are on shift at the local residential home for intellectual disabilities. Whilst in the day room, two of the service users demonstrate escalating risk behaviours. This becomes an altercation in which one service user attempts to push the other, shouting, and threatening to beat them. There are other several service users in the day room doing activities such as puzzles and reading. There is no other staff member in the room at present as the nurses are completing their medication rounds.

Scenario 2: Patient: 23 year old male History: Learning Disabilities Scenario: The patient has moderate learning disabilities, but also social and anger management issues. He is very overweight and has been diagnosed with diabetes in the last 18months. Despite MDT meetings and the development of a nutritional and exercise program for this patient, he continues to gain weight and his diabetes remains uncontrolled. His 3rd monthly HBa1C result has come back very high from a recent visit to his GP. The household food is generally controlled and budgeted by the nurses; however, you suspect this patient may be hoarding food which is contributing to his weight gain. He is also refusing at times to attend to his exercise routine, often resulting in angry outbursts that have resulted in damage to household furniture. Please discuss your actions and any care you will provide this patient.
